Japan is a dream destination for bike travellers. With a unique culture, incredible landscape, an abundance of great food and lots of places to camp – it’s a delight to go both bicycle touring and bikepacking in Japan. Japan is also a very cycle-friendly destination, ideal for bicycle touring beginners but also very enjoyable by expert cycle tourers. Cycling in Japan is super-safe, wild camping is incredibly easy, the road network is vast and well maintained. Popular bike touring areas include Kyushu, Shikoku, the Noto Peninsula, Hokkaido and – if you like steep hills – the Japanese Alps.

Japan has many cities that are great for cycling. Some of the best areas for cycling in Japan include Yoyogi Park and around (Tokyo), Imperial Palace and around (Tokyo), Sawara and Narita (Chiba), Sakai (Osaka), and Itoshima (Fukuoka). The Shimanami Kaido is Japan’s best-known cycling route, which is an absolute stunner. The 70-kilometer course follows a system of bridges and toll roads that link six islands in the Seto Inland Sea, connecting Onomichi in Hiroshima with Imabari in Ehime.

If you are travelling to Tokyo, there is a recommended route for riding bicycle. The Arakawa River Cycling Road is one of the most famous bicycle routes in Tokyo. It is a 90-kilometer cycling road that runs along the Arakawa River from Saitama to Tokyo Bay. Another famous route is the Tamagawa Cycling Road which runs along the Tama River from Tokyo Bay to Yamanashi Prefecture.
