Matariki is a midwinter festival celebrated by the Māori people of New Zealand. It is also known as the Māori New Year. The festival is named after the Matariki star cluster, which appears in the night sky during late May or early June. The exact date of Matariki varies because the 354-day Māori lunar calendar only approximates the 365.24 day solar Gregorian solar calendar.
In 2022, Matariki was celebrated on Friday 24 June and was marked as a public holiday for the first time ever in Aotearoa. This year, Matariki falls on Friday 14 July marking the reappearance of the constellation.
