If you are a hiking enthusiast and you are visiting Jeju Island, you should not miss the opportunity to hike Mt. Hall, also known as Hallasan, the highest mountain in South Korea. Mt. Hall is a dormant volcano that rises 1,950 meters above sea level and dominates the center of the island. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a national park that boasts a rich biodiversity and a stunning scenery.
Hiking Mt. Hall is not a walk in the park, though. It is a challenging and rewarding adventure that requires good fitness, preparation, and planning. In this blog, I will share with you some useful tips and information to make your hiking trip to Mt. Hall more enjoyable and safe.
When is the best time to hike Mt. Hall?
Mt. Hall is open for hiking all year round, but the best time to visit depends on your preference and experience level. Each season has its own charm and difficulty.
- Spring (March-May): Spring is a good time to hike Mt. Hall if you want to see the flowers and the greenery of the mountain. The temperature is mild and comfortable, and the trails are not too crowded. However, you may encounter some rain and fog, which can reduce the visibility and make the trails slippery.
- Summer (June-August): Summer is the peak season for hiking Mt. Hall, as many people want to escape the heat and enjoy the cool breeze of the mountain. The temperature is warm and pleasant, and the trails are well-maintained and marked. However, you may also face some challenges, such as thunderstorms, mosquitoes, and crowds.
- Autumn (September-November): Autumn is my favorite time to hike Mt. Hall, as the mountain is covered with colorful foliage that creates a stunning contrast with the blue sky and the lake. The temperature is cool and refreshing, and the trails are less busy than in summer. However, you may also encounter some strong winds and cold snaps, which can make the hike more difficult.
- Winter (December-February): Winter is the most challenging time to hike Mt. Hall, as the mountain is covered with snow and ice that make the trails slippery and dangerous. The temperature is cold and harsh, and the trails are closed or restricted depending on the weather conditions. Only experienced and well-equipped hikers should attempt this hike in winter.
What are the different trails to hike Mt. Hall?
Mt. Hall has five main hiking trails that vary in length, difficulty, and scenery. You can only hike one way from north to south, starting from different points around the mountain and ending at Sandfly Point near Milford Sound Village.
- Gwaneumsa Trail: This is the most scenic but also the most difficult trail to reach the summit of Mt. Hall. It is 8.7 km long and takes about 5 hours one way. It starts from Gwaneumsa Temple on the north side of the mountain and passes through steep rocky slopes, waterfalls, streams, and forests. You will be rewarded with amazing views of the crater lake Baengnokdam at the top.
- Seongpanak Trail: This is the most popular and convenient trail to reach the summit of Mt. Hall. It is 9.6 km long and takes about 4.5 hours one way. It starts from Seongpanak Visitor Center on the east side of the mountain and passes through gentle grasslands, forests, and bridges. You will also see some interesting rock formations and historical sites along the way.
- Eorimok Trail: This is a moderate and scenic trail that does not reach the summit of Mt. Hall but offers a great view of Yeongsil Valley from Witseoreum Shelter. It is 6.8 km long and takes about 3 hours one way.
